Well said. I have been working on customer service issues lately and one book I read, exclusively about excellence in customer service is actually titled, The Kindness Revolution. He sees kindness as the key. I agree.

Not sure why the respondents above called me Mark. It's my middle name, but how would they know? Perhaps it's because I wrote about a man named Mark in an earlier blog. I truly appreciate every one who comments. I welcome your thoughts...

Right on brother! It seems that the people you mentioned need to reflect on their espousal of "neoMcCarthyism" God give us the Spirit to espouse the goodness of his people.

I'm sorry, Beck's actual words were that a Day of Service on 9/11 is a "rape of a sacred memory."

Service. Rape.

Wow.

Check out Glenn Beck ripping Obama's signing into law a national Day of Service for 9/11:

http://www.thehotjoints.com/2009/08/26/audio-glenn-beck-rips-obamas-911-national-day-of-service/

He says devoting 9/11 to service is "hijacking" the day. He says we should save the service until 9/12 and instead remember the terror of 9/11. (sounds like fun)

Since we can't think of any examples of service that happened on 9/11.

No firefighters running up the stairwells of burning, falling buildings. No churches opening their doors to the shell-shocked people of New York. No one comforting another human being.

Not one example of service. Just terror.

Speaking of human, this kind of rhetoric that we're hearing from the entertainers on the right simply isn't. (human)

I need to stop writing. I'm getting all hot and bothered.

Steve,
Love you web site!

These guys are in a tough spot. One person who seems to walk this line well is Shane Claiborn in "Irrestable Revolution." Personally I try to do the next loving thing for the person. Sometimes that means saying something but most often not. Love seems to be a great filter to discern things through. That and discerning what is ego driven and what is not. It is so hard to reliquish control and trust that even if something "inapropriate" is said or done it may or may not get worked out. God's at work in everything that happens and we can't control all outcomes! Im not advocating a lack of sensitivity but if trust and life has been infused into these relationships hopefully they can endure a "religious" slip now and then.

The God journey guys have helped me work through a lot of my religious damage (http://www.thegodjourney.com/podcast.html)
Maybe helpful to someone else...

Many "Christian" conservatives have delegated the Constitution to an almost equal footing with the Bible.
They need to read accurate biographies of the primary composers of the Constitution (e.g. Jefferson, Adams, and Franklin) to learn that the concept of God's activity in the daily life is not what today's "Consitutionalists" would accept. I love the U.S. and it's basic precepts, but the it is a man made document written by fallible humans. God's Word (Jesus) are infallible!

As I see it - and I probably should have used that caveat from the start - if one is expected to hide was culture and faith in order to "get along" in one's own nation, then there's no relationship to be had that's worth the price of having it.

Now, when I lived in other countries I did most of the things suggested here that I wouldn't do at home, as I would want foreigners to do while they were in America.
